The newly released display typeface from Nora Kaszanyi, Gaia, is a melody of innovative technical elements and beautiful personification/characterisation of letterforms. This high-contrast display typeface responds to the often minimal approach to contemporary design of sans serif fonts, and works ornamentation into the intrinsic body of the glyphs.
Not only experimental in form, Nora notes, “Gaia is the personification of the Earth and one of the Greek primordial deities. She is the ancestral mother of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess". Thus, Gaia experiments with both sans serif display techniques as a form of technical expression, alongside a fascinating exploration of culture and character.
Unravelling throughout can be seen wafer-thin, intricate detailing in the counter-spaces and apertures; which gives the suggestion of a titled axis in selected glyphs - for example, in the lowercase 'a', 'p', 'd', and 'n'. Contrasted with elegant, slender terminals and sharp right angles, Gaia is both soft and strong; harmonious yet contradictory.
Suited to headlines and short text, Gaia can be imagined beautifully applied to artful editorial work, poster design and much more. In addition, the intricate ink-traps render Gaia accommodating of more medium length text applications; whilst continuing to deliver stunning visuals.
